Sossusvlei

Red dunes and ancient trees in the oldest desert.

Climb some of the world’s highest dunes at sunrise, walk among the ancient camelthorn trees of Deadvlei, and watch the Namib Desert glow at sunset.

Discover Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei lies in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, where vast red dunes rise from salt and clay pans in the heart of the Namib Desert. It is Namibia’s most famous landscape and one of the most photographed places in Africa.

Climb dunes such as Dune 45 or Big Daddy at sunrise, walk out to Deadvlei with its centuries-old camelthorn trees, explore Sesriem Canyon, or float over the desert in a hot-air balloon. At night, some of the darkest skies on earth reveal a dazzling sky full of stars.

Whether you’re planning a short stop on a Namibia road trip or a longer desert stay, we can help you plan Sossusvlei around your interests, travel style, and budget.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Sossusvlei can be visited all year. The desert is driest and most comfortable in the cooler months.

PERIODWHAT TO EXPECT
May – SeptemberCooler, clear days and cold nights. A popular time to visit, with comfortable conditions for climbing dunes.
October – NovemberWarming up, with clear skies and long days. Start early to enjoy the dunes before the heat.
December – FebruaryThe hottest months, with midday temperatures that can exceed 40°C. Early mornings and evenings are best.
