Walvis Bay

Seals, flamingos and dunes that meet the sea.

Cruise among playful seals and dolphins, watch flamingos on the lagoon, and travel by 4×4 to Sandwich Harbour, where giant dunes plunge into the Atlantic.

Discover Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s main port town, set on a sheltered bay just south of Swakopmund. Its lagoon and the rich, cold waters of the Atlantic make it one of the best places in southern Africa for marine life and birdwatching.

Join a morning boat cruise to see Cape fur seals, dolphins, and pelicans, kayak with seals at Pelican Point, watch flamingos feeding on the lagoon, or take a 4×4 adventure to Sandwich Harbour, where towering dunes meet the ocean.

Whether you’re spending a day or a few nights on the coast, we can help you plan Walvis Bay around your interests, travel style, and budget.

Why Visit Walvis Bay?

Marine Cruises

Head out on the bay to see Cape fur seals, dolphins, pelicans, and seasonal whales, often with fresh oysters on board.

Sandwich Harbour

Take a guided 4×4 journey to one of Namibia’s most dramatic sights, where giant dunes drop straight into the Atlantic.

Flamingos on the Lagoon

Watch large flocks of flamingos and other waterbirds feeding in the shallow lagoon.

Kayaking with Seals

Paddle among curious seals around Pelican Point with an experienced guide.

Coastal Scenery

Explore salt pans, dune belts, and the lagoon promenade, especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Walvis Bay can be visited all year, with marine life and birdlife present in every season.

PERIODWHAT TO EXPECT
December – MarchWarmest months and peak local holiday season, with good conditions for cruises and kayaking.
April – JuneMild days and quieter tours. Flamingo numbers on the lagoon are often high.
July – OctoberCooler and windier, with frequent fog. Whales may be seen during migration months.
NovemberPleasant, settled weather and fewer visitors before the summer season.

Morning cruises usually offer the calmest seas. Sandwich Harbour trips depend on tides, so we'll plan your days around them.
